It’s human nature to group things into genres and sub genres, and music is certainly no exception to that. Any record shop has all its music grouped into different sections but all of them contain some really interesting, inspiring bits of music. Neil is someone who really celebrates that, both in the music he creates at home and when he’s out djing, playing pieces from all over the world which are exhilarating and refreshing to listen to.
A big lover of jazz, and improv Krautrock bands such as Can, Neil brings a large element of spontaneity and unpredictability into his sets. He recently moved away from spinning vinyl to using a laptop which allows him to manipulate the tracks he plays live to a much greater extent, sampling pieces in real time, superimposing new beats, putting sounds through all manner of effects and generally whipping up some crazed electronic frenziness. Chaotic, beautiful, twisted, exciting and eclectic is one attempt to describe some of the stuff that goes on in one of Neil’s sets. In truth though, you’ve really just got to see him playing for yourself to understand how he manages to get such varied, contrasting music to work so well together.
Neil has djd in Leeds (where he’s originally from), Toronto and London where he currently lives.
